Daily Prompt: I Walk the Line

Have you got a code you live by? What are the principles or set of values you actively apply in your life?

This doesn’t completely follow the Daily Prompt and it is a day late, but it does pertain to codes and values.  So I will stray a little from the topic.

Ok, I feel so conflicted.  Last week a friend asked me for a big favor.

She is part of a nonprofit that awards grants to kids for artsy after-school and summer programs.  It’s a pretty cool program and I am glad to help her out.  The help that she needed was an outsider to read about ten applications, review them, and recommend full, partial or no award for each kid.  The kicker was that it need to be done in about 10 days.

I can do this.  I’m a teacher and am used to objectively evaluating students.  No problem…and then I started reading. Continue reading

Walking on the Moon

What giant step did you take where you hoped your leg wouldn’t break? Was it worth it, were you successful in walking on the moon, or did your leg break?

There have been a lot of giant steps for me in the last 16 years with Mercy.  In fact, many people along the way kept waiting for my leg to get broken, it never did.

Everyone in my life were just like many of the viewers on Earth of the Moon Landing.  They had no clue what the Moon was really like, so they just let their imagination run wild.  They used their own experiences to color what they saw.  They couldn’t see what the surface was actually like.

Why do people judge everything with there own eyes?  We all do it.  How often do we see the actions of a complete stranger and make a lot of assumptions about what is really going on?  I know I do it all the time.  Maybe it is entertainment for us.

But why do we do it to our friends too?  I think we do it to be right.  To be able to say, “I knew that was going to happen.” Continue reading

What vice can I not abide in others?

I saw this daily Prompt and immediately wanted to write….about what though?

Well, first what is a vice?

Taken from Wikipedia:

Vice is a practice, behavior, or habit generally considered immoral, depraved, or degrading in the associated society. In more minor usage, vice can refer to a fault, a negative character trait, a defect, an infirmity, or a bad or unhealthy habit (such as an addiction to smoking). Synonyms for vice include fault, depravity, sin, iniquity, wickedness, and corruption.

The opposite of vice is virtue.

I’m sure that the Daily Prompt is talking more about the minor usage of the word vice as most do.

I’m struggling with this question because I’m not bothered by others’ vices.

In order to consider it a vice, wouldn’t I have to feel that the practice was immoral, depraved, sinful, wicked, or even just unhealthy?  In that case, I can’t abide by murder, rape, and pedophilia.

If I think of it as a negative character trait?  I can’t abide by judgement, negativity, and unhealthy image standards..

And if I think of it as something that I don’t care for myself and can’t understand why anyone would like it?  I can’t abide by network television series, energy drinks, and flat brimmed baseball caps.
